Ankhi Das, policy chief of Facebook India, South and Central Asia has quit. Several mainstream media organisations on Tuesday quoted Ajit Mohan, managing director of Facebook India, as saying in an e-mailed statement that, "Ankhi has decided to step down from her role in Facebook to pursue her interest in public service. Ankhi was one of our earliest employees in India and played an instrumental role in the growth of the company and its services over the last 9 years,"
Das's resignation follows controversy about reported efforts to selectively curate political content. The messages purportedly originating from Das were leaked to the press, resulting in a national controversy first reported by the Wall Street Journal in August 2020. This was followed by Das and Facebook India officials being questioned by a joint Parliamentary committee.
With 290 million users India is Facebook's largest market.
