Corporate communications teams are sitting on significant AI potential. But most are yet to fully capitalise on it, according to a new report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
The report highlights a clear gap between ambition and execution. While leaders recognise AI’s value, adoption remains limited, with many teams yet to realise even basic productivity gains.
BCG estimates that AI could drive 26–36% improvement at a task level and up to 47% at a process level, particularly in areas like content creation, campaign management, and real-time reputation tracking.
However, readiness remains a challenge:
-
A majority of teams are investing at subscale levels
-
88% of chief communications officers say they are not fully prepared to lead AI transformation
-
Skill gaps and outdated operating models continue to hold teams back
That said, a small group of leaders are already moving ahead—embedding AI into workflows, investing in talent, and using it for more strategic outcomes like predictive insights and stakeholder engagement.
The key takeaway: AI adoption in communications must move beyond experimentation to full-scale transformation.
